Medtronic, Inc. invited the Fridley High School Key Club to volunteer at the Mile 19 Medtronic Plaza Water Station of the October 4th Twin Cities Marathon held in Minneapolis-St. Paul. Led by Justine Beran, 82 Key Club Members and Advisors gathered at 5:15 am to prepare for the Marathon.
Dressed in blue Medtronic Marathon shirts, they mixed Powerade and filled cups with the mix or water. It was impressive to see the cups stacked four levels high on the nearly block long water station tables. Medtronic provided the workers with a continental breakfast of doughnuts, muffins, bagels, juices, coffee and hot cider.
Then the fun began. The first Twin Cities 10-mile Run runner began to pass at 7:15 am. The wheel chair Marathon contingent passed at 8:15 am. The Marathoners came at 9:30 am. Part of the Key Clubbers formed an energetic cheer team stationed on a near-by bridge. They provided plenty of encouragement with their cheering, clapping and high-fives.
As runners passed by grabbing cups of refreshments, Key Clubbers worked hard filling additional cups and keeping the discarded cups off the running lane. Runners dressed in a wide variety of outfits, some with the layered look which they discarded one by one as they heated up. One runner wore a tuxedo; another a kilt.
It was a busy, busy time which kept the interest of all volunteers. Before they knew it, their shift was done. Fridley Key Club President Emmi Brytowski said, “I had a lot of fun! I told the Medtronic Supervisor to call us again for help next year. Too bad this is my last year in Key Club. I’d love to do it again!”
