Boxes and Boxes of Cheer

The Fridley High School Key Club donated a record setting 214 Operation Shoeboxes making its Operation Christmas Child Project a great success this year. The Key Clubbers filled the gaily decorated boxes with special toys, candies, school and art supplies and toiletries this past November. Many boxes were so jam-packed that they had to be divided into two boxes!

The contents of the boxes showed much thought went into them. They were filled with fun surprises for a girl or boy for Christmas. Some of the girl boxes had pink dolls, pink tiaras, pink boas and pink socks while the boy boxes tended to have footballs, matchbox cars and noise makers. The sorting and wrapping committee had a great time checking each box. They commented to each other on the items in the boxes, “Why didn’t I think of that?” “Boy, this is a clever idea!” “Wow, look at this cute doll!”

After the sorting crew checked all of the boxes, three Key Clubbers, including Project Chair Chloe Johnson, loaded them into two vans. They then delivered them to radio station KTIS on November 21. It was a really neat experience to go there because there were people from developing countries who had actually received boxes when they were living in orphanages. Since then they have grown up and moved to the United States. They told heart-touching stories of their shoeboxes. It made us realize that they and we are now helping other children around the world.

I thank those who participated in Operation Christmas Child this year. This great project helps children in need around the world. It well-suits the Key Club motto: “Caring: Our Way of Life”.
