Denis Cornell Announces Candidacy for Governor Elect for 2010-2011
3/30/2010 - District: Minnesota-Dakotas - Submitted by: Denis Cornell

After receiving encouragement from a number of Kiwanians around our district and after a great deal of consideration, I am announcing my decision to seek the position of Governor Elect for the Minnesota-Dakotas District of Kiwanis International for the Kiwanis year 2010-2011.

When I joined Kiwanis in 2003, I saw this organization as a way to give something back to the community that welcomed Nancy and myself so graciously following our move to Spring Valley, Minnesota from St. Louis, Missouri. My view of Kiwanis has evolved tremendously over the past seven years. Kiwanis stands head and shoulders above any of the other great service organizations in the world. Kiwanis is the only organization whose primary focus is making the world a better place through our children. We must multiply our efforts in the application of the defining principle of Kiwanis, "changing the world one child and one community at a time". The children of the world are the future of our world. It is our responsibility to ensure that the children are nourished both physically and intellectually.

As a member of the Kiwanis Club of Spring Valley, I have served as the President, served on the Board of Directors and performed committee chair assignments. I have served the Minnesota-Dakotas District as Lt. Governor in Region 7, and I have been privileged to serve on the District Board of Directors this year. In addition to Kiwanis, I have served on numerous church committees, on the Executive Committee of Starbase Minnesota from 1993-1996 (an aviation and aerospace curriculum used as a motivator to increase students' awareness of mathematics, science and technology) and as the Director of the Aviation Career Education Academy in Minneapolis from 1993-1995

I was born and raised in Oneonta, New York, the youngest of three, having two older sisters. My wife Nancy (also a Kiwanian) and I were married in May of 1971 and we have three children, Amanda, Alissa and Adam. Amanda resides in Rochester with her husband Al Holloway. Alissa resides in Rochester with her son Hunter, eight. Both Amanda and Alissa are employed at the Mayo Clinic. Adam is employed by Eaton Corporation and resides in Lakeville with his wife Lindsey and son Evan, five months.

Education: Technical training in Air Traffic Control, USAF and FAA Academy, Oklahoma City, OK.

FAA Management Training School, Lawton, OK (University of Oklahoma).

FAA Center for Management Development, Palm Coast, FL (Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University)

Military Service: United States Air Force, 1965-1969

Professional Career: I was employed by the Federal Aviation Administration for 33 years in the Air Traffic Control field retiring in June, 2002. I held controller assignments in facilities at all levels of complexity and volume including; Syracuse, NY; Chicago, IL and Cleveland, OH. I was a classroom and simulator instructor at Chicago Approach Control. I held Supervisory Air Traffic Control assignments at Akron, OH; Akron-Canton, OH; Cleveland, OH; and Boston, MA. I was a Facility Operations Specialist in the FAA, New England Region and the Assistant Air Traffic Manager at Bradley International Airport, Windsor Locks, CT and at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport. I spent the final six years with the FAA as the Air Traffic Manager of the St. Louis, MO Hub responsible for three Air Traffic facilities and two contract towers.

I have received the unanimous endorsement of the Kiwanis Club of Spring Valley in seeking the position of Governor Elect of the Minnesota-Dakotas District. I would consider it an honor and a privilege to serve as the Governor Elect and Governor of this great district. I ask for your support and your vote at the Minnesota-Dakotas District convention in Fargo, North Dakota in August.
