On the week of May 10-14, 2010, the Fridley High School Key Club sponsored a new project called “March of Dimes Money Madness.” Key Club has a long standing relationship with the March of Dimes Foundation, an organization which improves the health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature births and infant mortality. The Foundation is a useful way to make high school students aware of the problems in premature births and to get students involved with making a change.
The chairs of this project, Will Earley and Ali Sandberg, asked teachers if they would be willing to dress up in crazy costumes for the whole week. Each participating teacher would have a money bucket at the “March of Dimes Money Madness” table in the cafeteria. The teacher with the most money donated during the week would be the winner, complete with a nominal prize. The total money proceeds would go to the March of Dimes.
Four teachers jumped at the chance to volunteer in a heartbeat! As the week went on, an additional teacher begged to join in all the fun as well. Our popular math teacher, Ms. Swartout, dressed up as Pippi Longstocking and won the most student votes on the first day. As the teachers began to compete for the best dressed, the costumes got better and better! Student and staff involvement of this project was incredible. Our principal, Dr. Webb, also participated in this project and even gave out prizes to those who put money into his donation bucket. Behind the scenes he had to change his clothes several times throughout the day because of professional meetings he had to attend in business attire.
This “March of Dimes Money Madness” project was a success for the Fridley High School Key Club and the March of Dimes Foundation. The club raised $231.01! On Friday, the donations doubled which showed how excited our school was for this project. This project added spirit to the school as students voted on costumes such as a gorilla, pirate, promzilla, mad scientist, hula girl, hippie and Mario Girl. It was a fun way to channel the “squirreliness” of May students into a positive outcome. Key Club was the talk of the school!
